Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), a prominent private player in India’s commercial and defence shipbuilding sector, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). The MoU, signed on April 7, 2025, at GRSE Bhavan, marks a significant step toward enhancing India’s indigenous commercial shipbuilding capabilities.
Aligned with the Government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, this collaboration reflects SDHI’s commitment to developing world-class maritime infrastructure. The partnership aims to jointly explore opportunities in building commercial vessels and offshore structures, targeting both domestic needs and global markets.
By combining their strengths in design, infrastructure, and project execution, SDHI and GRSE intend to establish a scalable, efficient model for commercial shipbuilding. The agreement also includes provisions for sharing facilities, co-developing standardized vessel platforms, and implementing coordinated project management strategies to ensure quicker turnaround and improved cost efficiency.
In addition, the partnership seeks to foster a robust vendor and supply chain ecosystem, backed by shared sourcing and procurement strategies. It also places a strong emphasis on developing skilled manpower to support the long-term growth of the shipbuilding industry.
Beyond vessel construction, the collaboration will extend to ship repair, vessel trials, and other allied services—laying the groundwork for a holistic and sustainable model of industrial cooperation.
The MoU underscores a shared vision between SDHI and GRSE to elevate India’s maritime capabilities, foster innovation, drive economic growth, and generate employment through future-ready shipbuilding infrastructure.
